Allianz Malaysia is preparing to launch a basic medical insurance plan next year, joining a national initiative aimed at expanding healthcare coverage.
The new base product is “actually an opportunity to get these customers on board with health insurance coverage and avoid the financial distress,” said Mr Giulio Slavich, CEO at the life insurance arm of Allianz Malaysia.
Malaysia is rolling out a pilot programme for the base medical and health insurance/takaful plan, also known as ‘base MHIT plan’, in the second half of 2026, with the full rollout in early 2027. The initiative is a key strategy to tackle soaring medical inflation and insurance premiums.
However, insurers and takaful operators must meet the eligibility criteria to be allowed to sell the base MHIT plan designed to provide lower-cost coverage at the same premium rates for essential medical care.
Mr Slavich also highlighted that a co-payment product introduced in March 2025 proved to be popular with new and existing clients.
“Customers were positive about it, understanding that it’s a necessary pain for our health insurance and that it is going to be beneficial, A number of existing customers were also transitioning to this co-payment feature,” he said, reported The Edge.
